How We Met

We first met while working at Giant Eagle in Stow, Ohio. We were friends at first, but it became much more after we attended a wedding of one of her friends in Salem, Ohio on June 22nd, 1997.

The week before we attended the wedding, we went on our first date on June 13th, 1997. We went to see "Con Air", but unfortunately didn't have time for dinner because of our work schedules. After the movie, later that night at Lisa's doorstep, we kissed for the very first time. As with most first kisses, it was a bit awkward, but truly a memorable moment in our lives.

The following week, we attended the Salem wedding. After the wedding reception ended, it was still an early night, so we decided to see a movie (Batman Returns). Our second "official" date involved Lisa throwing popcorn all over Andy in the movie theater.

We have been sharing kisses, each one better than the first, for the last five years.

The Proposal

It was exactly five years after our first date, June 13th, 1997, that I decided to propose to her. The day began as a bright, sunny Thursday ... but quickly turned cloudy as the evening progressed. The original plan was to take her to Triple Crown Restaurant, then to the boardwalk along the Cuyahoga River to propose. However, we only made it half way through the plan for the evening.

At the restaurant, I repeatedly insinuated that I wasn't going to be able to purchase the ring for at least one more month. I also teased Lisa numerous times about how I might propose to her ... mainly with the idea of giving her a "spider ring" that you can get out of a gumball machine for twenty five cents instead of the purchasing the genuine article. We had been looking at rings for several months, so I was hoping to throw her off track so that she would not suspect what the remainder of the night had in store for her.

At the restaurant, I looked out the window and decided that it was too risky to continue with my original plan of action. It seemed as though rain was only minutes away from spoiling my perfectly planned evening ... so it was on to plan B (giving her the ring at the restaurant). I waited until we had finished eating and until she stepped away from the table so that I could get the ring out of my pocket. When Lisa came back, the dishes had been cleared and the moment seemed to be perfect. We had the entire section of the restaurant to ourselves. I began by telling Lisa that she was my best friend, and that I had valued our friendship and love more than anything in the world. Then, after I could see that she appeared a bit surprised as to why I was saying all of this, I got down on one knee, opened the white ring box, and asked her if "I could have the honor of having her as my wife". She began to cry as I removed the ring from the box. As her face lit up like I had never seen it before, and several "oh my gosh"es later, she said yes. I placed the ring on her finger and watched as she admired the brilliant, "shiny" diamond that she had been so patiently waiting for.

After both of us had a moment to catch our breath, the waitress came out and realized what had just happened. She admired the ring, congratulated both of us, and offered us complimentary champagne to toast the occasion. Lisa then immediately called Amanda, her soon to be maid of honor, to tell her about the good news (*and to brag*). Amanda and her boyfriend (now fiancé) Wade offered to take us out for a drink at Scorchers, which is where we spent the remainder of the evening. Lisa spent most of the time either calling her friends and family or singing karaoke with Amanda while I sat and admired the biggest smile I have ever seen on her face ...
